This is a fatal error - shutting down BeerSmith

I'm probably not much help, but are there any special characters in the recipe name? Like "&" "%" "$" or pretty much anything other than an apostrophe? This has caused some issues with other users, but I can't find the thread.

Your specific issue has come up before:

i get this when launching. beersmith will not open. i have had zero problems for two years and now out of the blue it fails to open.

If you rename your documents/BeerSmith2 folder and then start BeerSmith, does it still fail? If it does, the best option is to reinstall BeerSmith.

This is Brad's set of instruction for restoring BeerSmith.

The "worst case" recovery process for a corrupt file in BeerSmith 2 is as follows:
  - Rename your "Documents/BeerSmith2" directory to something else like "OldBeerSmith" which saves your data
  - Make sure you have the latest version of BeerSmith 2 installed from the main download page
  - Restart BeerSmith2 - which will create a new BeerSmith 2 directory with the sample recipes in it
  - You will likely have to enter your registration key again
  - Once you have BeerSmith running again, use the Open command to open your old Recipe.bsmx file
that is now in your "OldBeerSmith" directory  and then copy/paste any recipes you need into
    your new "My Recipes" folder
  - You can do the same with Equipment.bsmx, Hops.bsmx, etc... if you have added items beyond
those that came with BeerSmith 2
  - If you can't open one of the files (Recipe.bsmx for example), you can also try opening the numbered
backups (Recipe1.bsmx, Recipe2.bsmx, etc...) - these contain older copies of the original.
  - Let me know if you have any problems - and please keep your "OldBeerSmith" directory around
(the one you renamed earlier) as it will have all of your data in it!

alrighty then, here we go again. I restarted beersmith with my renamed beersmithold directory as stated and beersmith will now open with (as you said) the sample recipes. so now I use beersmith's open command and go to documents/beersmith2old/archive and there are my recipes. question 1 - is this where the recipes are supposed to be located? so now you say to copy/paste into my recipes. I can copy a recipe by right clicking but there is no paste command. I can click on the recipe to launch it into beersmith2 which then gives me the option of saving the recipe, I would assume into the new and proper folder. the only problem is, once again, I have to do this one at a time. there is no option (shift/click) to select multiple recipes to import? and I have hundreds of recipes. the last time I did this it took about a week  :'(  I am not understanding why I cannot simply drag the recipes from beersmith2old archives into the new beersmith2 archives, but if I do this they are not seen by beersmith?

Almost. Archive is the long way to the other coast... and walking.

Find the file recipes.bsmx. Open that one (you'll also notice numbered recipes files, which are backups). Go to the first folder and click it, then go to the bottom of the list and shift/click the last one. All of the folders should be highlighted.

Click over to the new recipes directory. You can right click, use the edit menu or use the home tab on the ribbon. All of these have a paste function. This will paste all of your folders and their content into the new directory.

For speed's sake, when prompted to save the directory while closing, click 'yes'.

Now, be careful. Obviously one of your recipes and/or profiles either is corrupt or has a symbol that BeerSmith is seeing as a command. If that weren't true, BeerSmith wouldn't have just restarted, you'd have had to do a complete install.

well that was umm less than exciting. clicking on recipes does nothing. it opens but no recipes. same thing for recipe1, recipe2, etc.

as I was pondering having to rebuild all this, it struck me that I am probably trying to use BS for something it really isn't designed to do. I have been using it as an archive for all my recipes and this is the second time it has bombed out on me. even if I could get it going again, somewhere is a recipe it does not like and I will likely never find it and stop it from all crashing down again. I think I will just start using the cloud feature to archive my recipes and not have to worry about it.

In the 'BeerSmith2old' folder? Odd considering you can find data in the archive folder.

I might've steered you a little wrong, Recipe.bsmx is what you want. I seem to consistently add an 's' when describing it. My bad.
