I'm thinking about kegging 1/2 of a 5 gallon batch and bottling the other 1/2. My question is do I use 1/2 the amount of
priming sugar needed for a 5 gallon batch? Is it that simple?

Another option is the keg the 5 gallons and then bottle 1/2 of it from the keg once it's carbonated :)

The carbonation tool in BeerSmith to figure out how much priming sugar you need based on Vol of CO2, Temp, and Beer Vol.  It will basically tell you that 2.5 gallons requires 1/2 of what 5 gallons requires.

Here's your opportunity to jump up to 10 gallon batches  :) Ferment in two carboys then keg one and bottle the other.
