A friend has been trying to convince me to join in the brewing competition he enters, and seems how the next style they're doing is IIPA it seems like a good time to have a go at it! I was planning on beefing up my Rye-PA recipe to IIPA strength (it was about 7% anyway), but unfortunately the local brew shop is already out of Amarillo and Simcoe hops. I've brewed a "session" IPA with a 2:1 mix of Centennial and Chinook and it turned out great, though it was a while ago and I'm struggling to remember enough about the hop flavour to decide if it would work with the rye. I was planning on using the a 50/50 mix of the Amarillo/Simcoe so should I do the same with Centennial and Chinook , or stick with the 2:1?

Anyway, here's where I'm at, all feedback welcome...

The best judge in the world is you and your peers. I have entered and won competitions on more than one occasion. I have also lost big with the same exact beers from the same exact batches that won BOS (or gold, or first in cat).

TRUE STORY: I made a Brown Porter and won best of show. The following year, at the same comp, same judges, it failed miserably. Didn't even place. OK fine. What kills me is, we took that same exact beer, from the same batch (the one that failed), added 2 drops of fake ass chocolate extract (just to hit one more category in that same exact comp) and, it got a gold and first. It went to 2nd round. The bottom line is don't let a BJCP judge tell you if your beer is good or bad. You know. Your friends know. Brew for you. Not them.

LOL! Yeah I'm not out to win gold, more just to get some feedback from more experienced folk on my beers. As said friend just reminded me; the judges get 1L of it but you have to drink the other 19L!

This is only the second rye beer I've brewed, so any feedback would be appreciated. I'm wondering if the spicy/pine of the Chinook would work well with the rye, might be worth going closer to 50:50 than 2:1?

Only one way to find out brother. Make it both ways. Try both of them yourself, and decide what YOU like best. I mean that too. Make it for yourself. Let me put it this way. Grandmas food is ALWAYS the best in the world for a reason. That is what you grew up with and, that is what you love. Does not matter what anyone else thinks. Believe what I say.
