I was calculating my first starter using beersmith and has wondering why it doesn't tell you how much extract to add. So when it tells me I need a 2L starter do I just go with the standard 1.040 gravity for the wort?

That's what I do.  It's the usually recommended starting gravity for any starter.  Low enough for the yeast to handle without being stressed, but high enough to get good cell count increase.

I've read a couple opinions that slightly lower is a better target, but that's the ballpark.
