Hi

I am preparing Beer Smith for my first All Grain brewing session.

I will mash with about 3 gallons of water.

I then will sparge with roughly 4+ gallons.

Yet, I believe I read something on this site that recommends equal amounts of water.  Did I dream this up?  If not, please set me straight.

Thanks

Hi,
Its all a matter of preference - some people prefer equal batches, while others do not.  Personally, I just feed mine into the top of the mash tun as space and time allows.

I think what is most important is using a slow lauter rate so you have time to extract as much as possible from the grain.  Many beginners sparge too quickly and get lower efficiencies.

Cheers!
Brad
