Are there any advantages/disadvantages to adding both Whirlfloc and Irish Moss to the boil? I happen to have both on hand and I'm making an Octoberfest (lager) tomorrow and would really like it to be clear.

Whirlfloc is the refined version of Irish Moss. There's no need to add both.

Most haze is due to smaller proteins that are part of cold break.

To aid clarity, you can do two things. First, find a way to chill the hot wort as quickly as possible. A wort chiller is great, but if you can circulate ice water through it after you get it to about 100oF, that will help. Borrow a sump pump to draw the ice water from a bucket through the coil and keep topping up the ice.

Second, when you rack and begin to lager the beer, keep it at 40oF or below. Chill haze will form the precipitate out in a couple of weeks. Rack and bottle while it's still cold.
