After draining my required volume into the kettle, I measure the temperature and the SG.
After adjusting the SG for temperature, I enter the figures into the eficiency calculation, and it gives me my extraction efficiency into the kettle.
The temperature of my wort at the time of measurement is usually between 55 to 60ºC.
My set up has a cooling volume loss of 4%. Now, obviously this is from boiling to pitching temperature.
However, even at 55 to 60ºC, the wort must have expanded from what it would be at ambient temperature, probably in the region of about 2%.
Does BeerSmith take this into account in the efficiency calculations?
If so, fine.
If not, then our efficiency measurements are probably overstated by about 2%.
