Wheat DME question

P

Pat Kopf

I have a question about the wheat DME grain item in Beersmith.  The wheat DME I buy from my local homebrew store is actually a mixture of 55% wheat DME and 45% barley DME to use for making wheat beers.  Is all wheat DME, thus the one in Beersmith, made with this mixture or is the wheat DME in Beersmith 100% wheat DME

Good question!

As far as I know both the dry and liquid wheat malt extracts are made with anywhere from 40-60% wheat, and the numbers in the database reflect this.

I think it would be very unusual to have DME or LME made of 100% wheat since you would have no enzymes during the malting process to do the actual sugar conversion.

You should be able to use the figures in the current database for your DME.

Cheers!
Brad
