Method for estimated color?

D

David Oldenburg

Brad,

I'm trying to figure out how BeerSmith figures out the estmated final color, which I've found to be quite accurate.  I'm trying to learn how various grains will affect my color and can't figure it out.

I figure that (deg. L * lbs. of grain)/gallons of wort would give the estimated color, but that's not matching what BeerSmith comes up with.

Thanks,
David

David,
BeerSmith uses the Morey method - which is quite accurate.  Beer color is not linear - additional colored grains do not increase the color linearly as the beer gets darker.

The method you are using works OK for lighter color beers but does not work as well as the beer gets dark.

Here's the technical note including the equation:

Cheers!
Brad
