Totally new to brewing, but really want to learn.
Fairly simple recipe:
10 lbs  Brewers malt 2 row
8  oz  Caramel malt 60L
.5  oz  Summt hops
.75 oz  Pearle
2.  oz  Cascade
1056 yeast.
My question is in water prep step. It says prepare 8.03 gallons water.
Mash in with 13.13 qts or 3.28 gallons
Sparge with  4.75 gallons
Add water to achieve 6.27 gallons
With the 3.28 + 4.75=8.03 gallons. Does the grain absorb that much water that I will have to add?

I don't use Beersmith to figure strike and sparge water, so I may not know what I'm talking.

With 10.5 lbs of grain you can expect to lose about 1.26 gallons of water to absorption.  I figure .12 gallons per lb of grain and I think this is what Beersmith uses.

8.03 gallons - 1.26 gallons = 6.77 gallons into the kettle.

I don't think you'll need to add any water to achieve 6.27 gallons.  You may be over.  Do you lose .5 gallons in your mash tun's dead space?

I went to the "water needed" tab of Brewsmith, I think I understand it after reading your post. Thanks for the help!
