I have 10lbs of grain and want to end up with 5gals to ferment, Beersmith is telling me to start the mash with 3.125 gals and then sparge 1.77 gals... ending up with only 4 gals to boil....what gives. I'm fairly new to all grain.
 
At a guess, I'd say maybe you have "top up water" set to something other than zero in the equipment details pop up menu.
