I would like to suggest a button that allows the brewer to add an item to the listings from the existing select (ingredient) dialog.
I brewed the Midas Touch recipe this weekend. I went to add the Muscat Grape Juice Concentrate to the Miscellaneous list. I could view the list, but had to also hit the home tab to have the add/delete new item buttons available. This holds true for all the ingredients when selected from the tabs or pull down menus.
It took me a few minutes to discover this peculiarity.
A simplification (for me at least) would be that the add misc button in the recipe design view opens the dialog with one more button--"Add misc". This is how 1.4 worked and to me seems more intuitive as it places the add new item function in the same context as the brewer discovers he needs to add a new item.
