I have several recipes saved.  Noe when i highlight a recopy it shows the recopy below, normal... but when I double click it everything is there except the ingredients.  Whats wrong?

Thanks
Tim

Hi,

In most cases this is caused by a corrupt "newopts14.opts" file.

By default BeerSmith is in the "C:\Program Files\BeerSmith" directory.

However under Vista you may also have a "Compatibility files" directory that shows up on the toolbar when you go to the BeerSmith directory.  This is where your data and the opts file likely lives.  The full path to the compatibility diectory is:  C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\BeerSmith

where {USERNAME} is your login name for Vista/Win 7.

Note that on many systems this is a hidden/system directory which will not show up unless you go into the options for Windows file explorer and set it to show hidden/system files.

If you delete the newopts14.opts directory there you should be in business.

Let me know if you have continued problems!  So far we've had no one lose any data and I've been able to get everyone back up and running quickly.

So I deleted that file, closed everything down then tried it again.... no change.  I did try to build a new recopy.  It works but nothing shows in the ingredient box.  It will still total the lbs, but I cant see what Iv added...
Thanks
Tim

Tim,
Did you check both locations listed above - often if one does not work you need to delete the file in the other location.

Just got your post today.  So I tried to delete it in both locations, then turned the computer off and back on.  Went to beer-smith, opened the recipe "Todds Rye PA" clicked copy to Brew log, Opened it there and still no ingredient.  The rest of the recipe IE lbs of grain and name are there... any other ideas? ;)

Thanks
Tim

Hi,

I had the same issue ingredients vanishing this week (version 1.4).

I tried the recommended solution above and it DID work. I am on Windows XP SP3.

Thanks for the instructions.

I have a similar issue to the ones discussed above, but now when I open beersmith nothing appears at all..and I mean nothing! No styles, no yeast, no sample recipes, nothing under the 'views' section. I even performed various searches for the .bsm files but couldn't find them. I even went as far as installing a data recovery program to try and find them, but they didn't appear to be deleted.

I tried deleting the newopts14.opts file as suggested first, but after this didn't work, I also deleted the newopts.opts. They would disappear from the folder and then I would try to open beersmith back up, but the same problem was occurring. After closing it back out, those two .opts files reappeared in the directory again. I don't know if all my recipes are lost in translation and if I can get them back again? Should I uninstall then reinstall the program? I don't want to go that route if that means I will lose all my data.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Darrin

Darrin,
Did you find the virtual store directory:
  C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\BeerSmith

Note that this may be a hidden/system directory so you may need to change the options in your File Explorer in windows to see it.  It is very likely your data is stored there.

For BeerSmith 2 I changed it so all data is stored in your Documents/BeerSmith2 directory instead.

I was not able to locate a VirtualStore directory, but I did check the folder labeled as BeerSmith under Program files. I also performed a search for this folder, but also came up dry. Under the folder, I was only able to see Equipment, Hops, Mash, Yeast, Shopping.bsm, etc. type files. I also made sure to show all hidden files and folders. Even if I did a search for the .bsm files, shouldn't they show up?

Hi,
They may not show up in a search as the directory is hidden by default.  You need to go into your Windows File Explorer settings and tell it to show the hidden files/directories so you can find the virtual store.
