Barley Crusher motor?
« on: November 25, 2011, 11:37:21 AM »
I've had a barley crusher (purchased from here) for a while now.  on the info it says i can use any 3/8" drill up to 500 rpm.

but, the black & dekcer 3/8" 9v is very much not sufficient.  adding even a cup of grains stalled the motor out.

so i'm not trying to spend another $180 on some big drill, so i'm thinking a regular electric motor will do me well.  but i can't seem to find any information on how many horse, amps, or other variables i need to consider.

if there is a cheaper drill i can get that will work, any sugestions?
what sort of motor should i consider?

Thank you

I use my corded Craftsman that's about 15 years old, not heavy duty at all and it turns it fine.

You can get this for $30 or even probably rent one for cheap from local auto parts store.

Probably just doesn't create much torue with a 9.6v battery.  Any cheap corded drill motor should work.

Corded, or at least 18-volt battery versions work.  14-volt and less are not powerful enough.

Lowe's has the dewalt 18 volt cordless on sale for $99 for the holidays.  Not sure how long it will be at this price.  Mine works fine with barley crusher, just make sure you have the extra battery charged and ready to go, in case the first one expires on ya.
