now when BS latest release tries to send something to the preview pane, it wants to open in my browser instead. any ideas?

Which operating system are you using? I'm assuming you have the preview pane enabled?
If you are running on the PC, is it possible you have Internet Explorer set to open all pages in a new window? BeerSmith actually uses Internet Explorer as a plugin for previewing on the PC so if the settings in IE are messed up it could cause strange behavior for the preview pane.

XP Pro SP2, FF 12. I get the open or save prompt. The tmp... .html gets put in my reports folder.
