Cashed Computer Lost Recipes?

The computer I had with all my recipes crashed,  I was able to get most of the files backed up but am unable to find the vast majority of my recipes.  Are they hidden some where besides documents/beersmith2.  I don't think I ever exported most of them.  I guess my question is is there a way to recover them or are they lost to the digital gods?  If so how can I keep this from happening again.
