Title: How often do you brew?
Post by: BeerSmith on September 04, 2006, 03:36:04 PM
I've been stocking up lately and brewed 3 times in the last two weeks.  However, I would say overall I brew perhaps once a month except for the summer.

So how much are you brewing?

Cheers!
Brad

2-3 times a month for me Brad, it's not uncommon for me to have up to 120 lt in fermenters or kegs at any one time.

Cheers

   10-15 times a year.
One or two will be meads and one or two will be a cider or something different like a wheat braggot.

Just getting back into it but have done two batches in 3 weeks.  My brother-in-law wants to start brewing, so we're going to do a co-op batch this weekend, making 3 times in a month.  BUT, I suspect as my work schedule pick up heavily in the 4th quarter that I'll probably only be able to average 6 to 9 batches a year.

Well, being that I just started brewing, very little.  I would like to get on a schedule of about once a month, though...

I can drink almost 5g a month, with the gift or comp here and there.
I try to brew two or three batches per year over and above that, for strong stuff to lay down, or party beers that will get slugged by the masses. If you think about it, there's only about 40 pints in a 5g batch, which means in about 9 1/4 batches per year. Want a second pint? Want to share? Better brew more!
And if the well ever goes dry, that's when I really try to ramp it up for a couple months, so that I'm not constantly drinking young beer. My goal is to drink the average-weight brews at least 6wk out, preferably two months before tapping. Milds, some wheat beers, etc., are the exception.

The wife and I brew about once a month sometimes twice to three times as it gets closer to summer so that we have a good stock for all of the summer Barbeques. I still bottle so I always have to be careful to have enough bottles around for the next batch - I think I will switch to kegging soon, but have to get ahold of all the equipment.

This was a good question Brad

On average, somewhere between 1 - 2 times a month depending on beer stock on hand. I also have a few parties I brew for so that involves making about 5 brews of different beers.

I go in batches (pun intended).  I'll brew every two weeks where I'll be cycling thru my equipment: when the batch moves from primary to secondary, I start a new one in the primary.  I've gotten to where I've had about 10 different beers on hand for sampling.  Now I've only got 4 on hand with one in the secondary.

Averaged out over the year, it's probably one a month.

Usially 6-7 times per year because in summer is not possible(35-40 C0)

I just got into brewing AG beer, and since September 16, 2006, I've brewed 8 five-gallon batches - the last two yesterday, 12/23.  So if I keep this pace up, it will average out to 32 batches a year !  Have to wait and see if this pace is sustainable .....

I appreciate your generous offer Beer_Tigger, but between my 3 adult children, their spouses, my brew-buddies at work, and myself (my wife is NOT a beer drinker), we do a pretty good job consuming all that is made.  If that changes however, I will PM you with details on how to get to my house !

I do my boil outdoors.  Carrying 50lbs or so of steel and boiling sugar water over snow and ice is quite unwise, so I don't brew from November to March.

I began brewing 13 months ago with extracts.  Within three months I moved to all grain.  I brew all year long outdoors averaging two five gal batches each month.

Living in west central Wisconsin has allowed for some cold brew days but they are the ones I remember the most.

I'm making the move from mini or partial mash to all grain in the next couple months.  Brewing outdoors is going to suck for a few months, but Once I get up to 10 gallon batches it is gonna be so worth it.

I'm not sure if I'll do it in the garage or out on the deck (water supply)

I do around 10 batches per year, give or take a few.  I find that my biggest limiting factor is the amount of available supplies for bottling/kegging.

Lately I've been keeping a fairly crazy pace of almost every weekend.  My goal is to get to the point where I can't brew cause everything else is all filled up.  Between primaries (I have two) secondaries (I have two ) and my three kegs, I'd like to try and get a good queue.  Right now I have two beers in the primary, one in the secondary and three in the kegs so I'm almost there.  Only problem is I think one of the beers in the kegs is almost gone which will open a keg and force me to keep brewing  ;)

Unfortunately I am only able to brew 6-9 times a year.  Being Active duty navy, I don't have a whole lot of home time, and stop brewing about a month before getting underway to allow time to take care of what is in fermentation.  Otherwise I do some long term Lagers to give me something to drink when I get back from a 4-5 month long deployment.

Oh boy, I try to brew 2-3 times a month. I used to brew 1,000 gallons 4-5 times a week (oh, those days were wonderful), but unfortunately, only 20-30 gallons a month now. And I'll be damned if it's not more work to brew 10 gallons at home than it is to brew 30bbls at work.

Got my first equipment kit for Christmas from the wife in 2006. 2007 I brewed 16 beers.  2008 I only brewed half as much with 8.  Went all grain in 2009 and have five beers so far.

I am trying to brew about three times a month. Being active duty National Guard, one weekend a month is usually shot. Often on the road on another weekend. So typically have two weekends to try to do three batches. Been trying to keep my two primarys and three secondarys full to restock the beer supply.

Time for a bigger brew pot.  Twice the beer in almost the same time.  Plus you could try different yeast and hops in different carboys.  Or diff ferm temps with all else equal.

I'd recommend you brew a favorite style ale that you like (not lager) that is not too high in gravity.  Lagers take more yeast, take longer, require different ferm temps, and you want easy for the first couple.

Richard, I did the same thing and about a year later, I make 10gallon all grain brews.  +1 on keeping it simple at first.  Easy recipee that will come out well so you enjoy your results.

2008 was a heavy year for me, when I brewed ten 5-gal. batches (plus a couple other times helping friends brew on their equipment).  I had stocked-up considerably with malt and hops during the year.  Then, I got laid off (December '08).

2009 has been a record year for me, with 19 batches to date (mid-Nov) and with 4 more in the "Brew Queue", not to mention the days spent helping others brew.

I brewed 21 five gallon batches in 08.

In 09 thus far I have brewed 13.  The difference is that I took most of the summer off as I worked on my brew stand.  In 08 all my batches were five gallons.  I am now doing 8-10 gallons at a time and am brewing often.  I think by the end of the year my batch count may be down but my volumes will be up.

This at a time when quality is also rising.

New member here.  I have only done a few brews so far.  Averaging once every year(!) starting about 4 years ago.  Just realized that.

Found a $#!* load of ingredients in my cabinet a couple weeks ago, and started up again.  That average number should be changing soon.

Hello Brad,

We brew two batches a weekend during our winter brewing season. We're not religious about it so if other activities take us away, we're OK with that. The last two years we've done about 32 batches in the season. We don't brew in the summer, we catch up on the drinking end of things. ;D
Statistically, this comes to about 2.5 brews each month.

Okay, so my average is WAY up compared to previously.

Over the last month I have done 3 brews.  Finishing one today;  Probably why I decided to jump on here and post.

A Pete's Wicked Clone

An Irish Stout from an old kit.

& today - An Anchor Steam Clone - finishing the boil now.

Lately I've been brewing a batch every other week in the warm weather, and once a month when it's below freezing outside.
Though I started doing double batches so that may change.
I've got six kegs, but I've never had more than three with anything in them at any one time.
I'm trying to change that.

I am very new to this drinking my first batch, I used 22 oz bottles, 24 of them for  a 5 gal batch and at 1 a day consumption it looks like I will be on a 3 week schedule. I will probably ramp this up to a 2 week schedule so that I have an ample supply. 4 of my first batch have already been gifted.

Once a week, every Thursday.  Around Finals week I usually take a couple weeks off to study but then make up for lost time in the week following Law School Finals.
I would like to brew twice a week but between taking care of 3 kids 3 and under, and reading around 150 pages of law text a day, it is not possible.

I try to brew once a week.  With all the cleaning, sanization, set up & take down required to brew, ferment & bottle, I find it's a lot like an exercise regimen.  If you stop doing it on a regular basis, it's tough to get started again.

Once a week (on the weekend) keeps my head in the game...

I don't know where some of you find the time to brew that much unless it's your profession.

I get out to brew a little more these days with my buddy who owns the smallest brewery in Colorado, Three Barrel.

I am semiretired and just starting so I'm itching that scratch!  Prepping for my 4th beer brew, third mead and first wine.  I have inventory for 4 (2 extract & 2 partial mash) beer batches, a fruit Zinfandel and a sparkling wine.  I just converted a small chest freezer to hold 8 corny kegs, a refrigerator to hold 3 and summer is coming fast!! Sometimes i'll brew mutiple times a month, and then take a month off it just depends on how busy i get. trying to go with a seasonal brew schedule. i like differant beers as the seasons change, adding new ones as i go, thats whats cool about the world of beers, its so vast it never seems to end. all in all i'd say 5 to 9 times a year.

Having a functioning liver is way overrated :D

I've brewed almost every weekend so far since the end of March. Typically 2 five gallon batches per brew weekend. Just made the jump to all grain last weekend and already have 2 all grain and one extract kit brewed in the past 7 days. All grain Black IPA next weekend if I can squeeze that in.

I am a fair weather homebrewer and only brew during non snow months as I have a contract to run guided dogsled tours in northern Minnesnowta during the winter months.

And i do this 2 to 3 times a month I harvest yeast and buy my hops in 1 lb. nitrogen bags and keep them in the freezer
of the kegerator and I wash my yeast and store in small mason jars in a solution of distilled water in my kitchen fridge.
i buy and crush my grains locally I am fortunate to have an excellent and highly  knowledgeable local supplier and am

I started brewing beer with my old man just after I finished high school in the mid 1980s.  Made my way from kits to DME recipes and eventually to all grain.  Was lucky to brew once a month during the cooler months back then.  Sadly I stopped brewing when I moved to China in 2003.

In 2007 I was fortunate to meet a Brew Master from Germany who now works for Poulaner.  He was willing to help me out with raw materials until I could source them here.  It took me and 'Grasshopper' nearly a year to build up the brewing equipment to take our Brew Master friend up on his offer but eventually we had the basics and haven't stopped adding pieces of kit since then.

Now we have so much brewing stuff we have rented a 3 bedroom rooftop apartment to house the brewery and our mountain bikes, bike stand and tools etc.  We refer to it as our 'Man Cave'.  Aside from the bike equipment, the 6 burner stainless steel BBQ and the chili garden the 'Man Cave' houses a combination meat grinder sausage stuffer, a 20 ton apple press, 150L HLT, 100L insulated mash tun, 200L boiling pot, plate chiller, 2 conical fermenters with water chillers (80L &130L), 3 chest freezers for lagering/serving, 2 standard CO2 faucets, a stout tap, a soda fountain, CO2 bottle, 70/30% mixed gas bottle, O2 bottle,  0.5 micron diffuser, magnetic stir plate with 4 liter flask for yeast starters and 20 corny kegs with another 10 on the way.  The CIP pump stand is nearly finished for the 130L fermenter that came with a CIP ball and the plans for the keg cleaning machine are not far from being ready to sign off.  Did I mention that we are 'Gear Heads"?.

We are currently brewing twice a month and getting 4-6 kegs a shot.  We like to keep a light and a dark beer on tap all the time as well as a stout on our mixed gas faucet and soda water in our soda fountain.  You can often find a keg or two of hard cider hanging around the aging room during the spring and summer months.

The more beer we make the more popular we are with the expat community here in Shenzhen and Hong Kong.  Will be bringing 3 flavors to a party this weekend.  It is a good thing taxis are cheap and easy to find in this part of the world.

And I brew double batches, I petty well got it down where between cleaning up equipment and mashing, and heating spare , it's a 10 hours day but I look at it this way it takes 6 hours to brew 10 gallons so I might as well to 20 gallons I can heat hlt, mash, sparge, boil while the other batch is doing it thing ,,,, it taken about 4 times to get it down but it work that I don't mind , beats paying high dollar or beer that you can find in your location that you want to drink, dont for get the Oxygen lol

The holidays and super bowl really wiped me out.  It's so hard to get 3-4 months ahead.  I really think my beer is better after 90+ days in the bottle.

I've done 11 batches since late December.  I have ingredients for 4 more I had hoped to get done by now.  The incredible weather has kept me outside!

I'm probably going to increase my brew frequency since I've now learned how to harvest yeast from prior batches. What an easy process! definitely worth a look on Youtube.

I brew nearly every month a 20 liter batch.
In addition I am active with some wine making as well.

I brew a 5 gallon batch every Sunday morning after it warms up a bit in the winter months.
Can't lift 10 gallons to move it close enough to the indoor faucet.

10 gallon batch every other Sunday at the butt crack of dawn in the summer.
Sometimes I do a 5 gallon batch in between if I'm not camping or fishing or riding the motorcycle.  8)
My outdoor hose reaches my garage / man-cave where I conduct the enjoyable deed in the warmer months.

Gotta love making better beer than you can get at the bar or liquor store for under 40 cents a pint. :)

Beersmith is my best friend. Couldn't do so well without it.

If I had enough equipment I would brew every day.
That's the best answer yet!!
I'm with ya.
I have 25 gallons in 3 buckets and 2 carboys now. Also 2 full kegs that I just tapped yesterday!
Added new taps to my keggerator last night. Man what a difference from those plastic party taps.
I'm stoked to brew again but all of my storage facilities are full now.

I started brewing again after a couple years of just buying good beer. Prices are rising so I am back to where I was 20 years ago drinking a fine pint but being insulted at the pricing. I brewed my first batch in a while 8 days ago ( an all grain red ale )  and did a all grain porter yesterday. I see myself brewing weekly for a while until my kegs are full... I forgot how fun it is to brew.

I normally brew 2 to 3 times a month, sometimes more. I brew 10 gallon batches, all-grain. My wife and I have several family members and close friends that go through my beer as fast as I can brew it. Good problem to have, I suppose, as it forces me to brew more and hone my skills. Two temp controlled chest freezers (one for keg storage and one for fermenting), two kegerators (one for serving with 2 taps, and one for fermenting, and two fridges gives me plenty of space for having several kegs at the ready.

Every 2 to 3 weeks so far, need to find more drinkers to keep our stock under control.

If I had my druthers (gotta find out who sells those...) I'd brew at LEAST once a week. Not sure what I'd do with all the beer but I'm sure someone would figure that out for me!

Turned into a "Binge Brewer" (sort of like my college drinking days) Just got done doing 5 batches. The bad part of that is that if yu get an infection...Well it can be bad.
Only lost one out of the 5 though a schwarzbier. The upside is I saved a Ginger Ale, Golden Ale, Octoberfest Marzen, porter, and brown coffee ale. Should be a good winter  ;D
Last session was mid summer.

Still a fairly new brewer so I've been averaging about once a month. I am thinking about doing small 1 gallon or so batches in between so that i can brew more often and have something to experiment with.

I tend to brew about once per month. I can only drink about 5 gal in a month and thats with help.  I've become quite popular in the neighborhood and at work now that I've gotten a twin tap kegerator.  I need a spare fridge if Im going to brew more frequently. That's next as long as Moma stays happy.

I have 4 over 21 sons and we get together at least once a week to brew, and sometimes mom comes out and joins in.  Occasionally the Mrs. and I will do a batch on our own during the week.  We just started in November, but are learning a lot and enjoying a hobby together.  We have 4 beers tapped, and have 5 - 8 total in kegs all the time.

The boys all live within 3 miles of us, so it is easy for them to stop by and pick up a growler as wanted, so it goes pretty fast.

Without Beersmith and my Top Tier system, I know it would be a lot more difficult than it has been.

Once or twice a week, though I think I will be cutting back on frequency now that I've upgraded my equipment to 10-gallon batches.

I'd like to do once a month, but really get in 6-9. I'll be stoked if I can get 12 in this year.. but would like to have the time for more!

I've been averaging about once per month due to space constraints.

I usually brew once a week or so.  I can store 8 cases of 12 oz. bottles either ready to drink or conditioning.  Then demand and the draw-down of my stock tells me when to brew another batch.

There are some varied tastes in my beer drinking family & friends so I tend to alternate between dark, full bodied beer one session, then a lighter, more hoppy beer during for the next batch.

i brewed 2 times in 4 days, then once a week.....until i ran out of bottles.
now i don't brew until i am close to enough bottles (or am about to go buy 2 more cases of bottles).
i now seem to keep 6 batches bottled at all times, a soon as i have enough bottles, i go back to 7 (because of all the partials).

I just got into the hobby last winter, but I am on track to get in  6 - 9 brews this year with a break for the summer due to the heat.

I pulled out the brew calendar for 2012.  25 - 5 gallon batches in 12 months.

8 months of brewing and I've done 12 5-gallon batches. Vacation this week, so I'm doing 3 this week alone.

try the t-shirt/towel method and you may be able to keep brewing in summer.

i got some huge thick styrofoam cooler from work and am going to use them to keep the temp down when i brew. starting today because temps this week are all up into the 80s so the house is heating up now :(

Or you can do what I do and that is brew Belgian style beers in the warmer months, since the little critters like it a little warmer.

I wish one of the options to answer the question was, "when ever I can".  At one point I brewed 5 batches in 3 weeks.
