Beersmith 3 display issues on Ubuntu Linux 24.04

I've recently moved to Linux on a system that could only run Windows 10, and have 4 licenses here for Beersmith 3, and only 3 were in use, so decided to install it on the Linux desktop.

Everything seems to work well, with the exception that the "Report" pane at the bottom of the window is black, where it would normally show the Recipe, Brew Steps, or whatever selected report is while viewing the recipe list. I can edit recipes just fine.

This is on a stock Ubuntu 24.04 LTS desktop install, all updates, and the newest Beersmith 3.2.8 .deb package available from the website.

Any ideas?

Here is a screenshot showing what I am talking about:

Thanks!

Try running "beersmith3" from the command line - it will likely show some errors including any missing packages. Likely there is one supporting package you need to install to get Webkit to run properly.

I ran it from the command line. I just see the following:

jim@home-pc:~$ beersmith3

I did a few things, and then exited, the black box was shown as before, then exited. No further messages appeared in the terminal window.

I did see the notes elsewhere about dark mode possibly being an issue, and had turned that off previously, as it did cause some of the windows inside Beersmith to be unreadable.

Ok,

I ran again, and realized I had not clicked into multiple recipes, causing it to attempt to show different things in the Reports section down bottom. I ran again and did that, and get further output:

If I try to print with that checkbox under Reports set to send to default browser/text viewer, I get this:

Access to the file was denied

The file at /home/jim/.beersmith3/Reports/bsxtmp_371161789.htm is not readable.
  • It may have been removed, moved, or file permissions may be preventing access.

If I turn that checkbox off, I can print to the file ~/Documents/output.pdf and it shows what I expect. I've not tried printing to one of my actual printers yet.

Again - this is a fairly recent clean install of Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 (the LTS version).

As a followup - those Gtk related warnings in my prior post only occur if you turn on that checkbox for the Reports to be sent to the default browser. So it may be a Firefox related warning, not Beersmith. With that turned back off, printing a report does not bring up the browser, and no error occurs.

So its back to really just the report preview window pane not working.
