Am I understanding these two terms correctly?

Is "batch size" the amount of wort I take from the mash tun and "boil volume" the amount remaining after I boil the wort?

Usually, Batch size is the finished boil volume that goes into the fermenter.  Boil volume usually means starting pre-boil volume or the volume collected from the mash / lauter tun.

That makes sense to me BUT Beer Smith consistently tells me a boil volume that is smaller than the batch size.  That doesn't make any sense.

Nevermind, I messed everything up by choosing a a gallon brew pot -- I have 6 gallon plus.  Once I corrected the equipment everything else corrected.
