Heatsticks

Anyone using heatsticks in mashing or wort boiling?  Do you need a temp controller on the heating element?

I assume you are talking about using a heating element immersed in the boiler?

This was common some time ago, but is not used as much now due to carmelization that occurs on the heating element, particularly with extract brews.

Most people I know either put the pot on the stove or use a propane stove outside.

I would think you would certainly want a temperature controller so you can control the boil.

Cheers!
