I have edited several ingredients that were added via the add-on import (File >> Add-ons...). I was curious if re-adding or re-importing an add-in file would overwrite my edits. The experiment went like this:
  1. Import an add-in containing just one item (I used "ZH Base Malt 1 grain")
  2. Edit the grain's Notes field, but do not change the Name field.
  3. Just to be sure, I closed and reopened BS3.
  4. I selected Files >> Add-ons... and uninstalled the ZH Base Malt addon. My edited fermentable remained (with my Notes edit).
  5. Closed/reopened BS3.
  6. Selected Files >> Add-ons... and installed again the ZH Base Malt add-on.
  7. The one ZH entry did get imported, but this time, it overwrote the Notes on the item I edited.
I'm wondering how, in the future, I can preserve edits to ingredients and prevent an inadvertent re-import of an Add-on from clobbering edits to Add-on items.
(I know--just don't re-import add-ons is an answer, but I'm looking to myself-proof my data ;))

Thanks.
