On the recipe list screen a new column for % of ingredients available for the recipe.

There are days, like today actually, when I have an unexpected window to brew (thank you, rain). I have a general idea of what type I am in need of but when going through my list of recipes it can be a bit daunting (says the guy with only 30 recipes) to narrow down the recipe depending on what ingredients I have on hand. I haven't quite figured out the weighting of percentages as in I need 10lbs of a grain but I only have 8 and how that affects the total percentage of availability , but maybe some community voices can help with that.

I think BeerSmith is fantastic, I have certainly grown with it. It has taken a while for me to implement more features in my brew day but as I do I only appreciate it more. When analyzing my brew day and how I can become more efficient, from brew house layout, to time spent on steps, my latest item to tackle is the time it takes me to go from recipe choice to starting to brew. This is probably only helpful for the days that are unplanned, or when I just couldn't find the time to get out to the LBS or maybe just being lazy.

Keep up the great work, love the blog emails

In the recipe tab look for the "Grain Pct" icon. That tool will help you dial in the correct percentages of fermentables. Many brewers, especially pro brewers, list their recipes in percentages rather than weight because every brewers system, processes, and efficiency are different. 10 pounds of base malt on your system will very likely give a different result as 10 pounds on my system. Percentages are much more accurate across the board.

Oh ya, I get that. But to clarify my suggestion. As an example, if my recipe is 10lbs 2 row, 2oz Cascade and 1 package of SAF05, and on my inventory I have 50lbs of 2 row, 4oz of Cascade and 4 packages of SAF05 I have 100% of the ingredients on hand to brew right now. But let's say I only have 1oz of cascade on hand so I only 75% of the ingredients. So spontaneous brew day I fire up brewsmith and knowing I need a Pale Ale or whatever, I sort by type and see what of my tried and true recipes I am fully stocked to brew. And if everything is under 100% I can take the closest and maybe use a substitute ingredie t. And I am probably niche in this and I get that, just an idea born from what holds me up when a moment happens that I cam brew
