does anyone know how to alter a beer recipe to get more abv,can it be done with the beersmith program?

do you want more or less the same flavor and mouthfeel but just a bit more kick?

you can add some simple sugar (table sugar) this will boost the ABV and if you don't over do it the flavor affect will be minimal. you can also add more malt (either extract or grain) to get more alcohol but this will affect the flavor and body/mouthfeel.

Also, when increasing the ABV, you will probably have to adjust the hops upward to counteract the increased maltiness or sweetness.

It isn't the amount of alcohol in a beer that makes it great.  It's the taste.  If you up the ABV to the point of a cloying sweetness, you probably won't like the taste.

I'm learning that balance between malt and sweet is very important in the overall flavor of a beer.  Some are best when towards the malty side.  Some are best when towards the hoppy side.  Some are best when they are balanced between malty and hoppy.

If you want to get all tore up from the floor up you should give up beer and just go buy some everclear but, if you brewed a batch and the OG came in too low, just boil it longer or use less water. If you brew all grain you may ran too much sparge water into it. Its pretty simple. More sugar = more ABV.
