Yeast Starter Discrepency Recipe VS Starter Tool

Planning a 5.25 gallon Pilsner, OG of 1.050. The Recipe Starter tab indicates 180.8 Billion Cells needed. The "Yeast Starter Tool" indicates 369.3 Billion Cells needed. Recipe is set for a Pale Kellerbier, the Yeast Starter tool is set at Lager

In your picture of the starter tab within the recipe, I do not see a yeast listed in the design box.  If you don't have a yeast entered for the recipe, the starter does not know what cell count it should choose.  Likewise, there would be no date entered for the production of the yeast, so it would not know how the viable cell count of the starting yeast.

Just figured that out as well. I assumed the recipe was calculating the cells required based on the recipe style, it's not. It's calculated based on what type of yeast your using.

Each yeast profile has a setting for the type of yeast/pitching rate to apply.  You can adjust the calculated amount of the pitching rates according to the type of yeast in the 'options' tab under 'yeast starter'.
