Bob hit it exactly on the head. The key is using hot PBW and not skimping on time. By hot, it should be at least 140oF, but not hotter than 180oF.
Pro Tips:
1) Store the system with the valves at least partially to fully open, This allows the ball to completely dry.
2) After thoroughly rinsing, you can do a quick acid run with phosphoric or vinegar to neutralize PBW residue.
The basics thing is that as long as everything is rinsed to being visibly clean and stored so it can drain/dry, you're good. Some hoses can take on stains after a while, but that doesn't equal contamination.
