If I were to start my mash tonight, then go to sleep and mash out, sparge etc. in the morning, is there a problem with this?

I've read if mash gets below 140F it can get gummy, but I guess you'd heat it back up anyway to mashout.  Grains sitting in water that long may do odd, unforeseen things.  I have read comments here that used mash muck allowed to sit overnight soured quickly and smelled like death within 12 hours.

Would higher water ratio of an unfinished mash keep away the Grimreaper?

I can attest to the Soured Mash and the Smelled like Death warmed over! Not a pleasant thing!

I had a stuck sparge once one night and it took me an extra 2 hours to sparge. By then it was almost midnight So I packed it in, got up the next morning. Good Lord! It would knock you down!

Preston,

Don't mean to laugh at your experience but your description is funny.

Maybe I won't do that then, maybe I'll just get up a little earlier

Got up a little earlier today, about a quarter till 7 and was done boiling at 12:15.  I was completely done, with clean up and everything else around 1:30.  nice quick brew day, well early brew day anyway.  It felt weird taking my runnings to the kettle at 10 something in the morning.

Laugh, life can be funny!

I start my brew-days early also, this way I can have the rest of the day to do family things. Picture this: 9:30am Saturday morning. Me holding a HB the SWMBO walks out of the house and proclaims to the world that I have an addiction... I then proceed to tell her that it takes good beer to make good beer. SWMBO walks off shaking her head and muttering "Drinking before noon!".

Everyone needs a little "Hair of the dog" every now and then right?

This has happened on numerous occasions, and most likely will continue to happen. Anyhow back to the post, I usually finish with cleanup around noon.

Cheers
Preston
