Hi and thanks for a great software!
I am a beginner brewer and it has helped me a lot!

So, probably I am totally misunderstanding something, but the recipe part of the software is a bit confusing here and there:

After Mash Steps my recipe say:
◯ Add water to achieve boil volume of 10,00 L
◯ Estimated pre-boil gravity is 1,078 SG

Thereafter my boil ingredients are listed including:
Spraymalt DME and Cane sugar

Is it an implicity that pre-boil gravity is always measured including extra fermentables listed in the boil section?
I actually messed up a bit because of this.

Shouldn?t it instead say:
◯ Add all other fermentables (LME, DME, sugars...)
◯ Add water to achieve boil volume of 10,00 L
◯ Estimated pre-boil gravity is 1,078 SG

Alternatively:
◯ Add water to achieve boil volume of 10,00 L
◯ Estimated post-mash gravity is 1,056 SG

The second thing:

After the boil, down in my recipe it say:
Estimated Post Boil Vol: 8,50 L and Est Post Boil Gravity: 1,062 SG

But after that, it say:

◯ Add water if needed to achieve final volume of 12,50 L
◯ Measure Actual Original Gravity _______    (Target: 1,062 SG)

It must be that the post-boil gravity is not corrected for the post-boil volume?

Thanks!

You are correct in that the pre-boil gravity includes any extract or sugar additions made during the boil.  Same holds for the post boil gravity, which is really the gravity into the fermenter.

The template for the brew day sheet was written long before the latest changes to BeerSmith (I only started using it in the early days of BS2 and it is the same template which is in BS3).  You can always make a copy of the .htm file of the brew day sheet and edit it to create your own personalized copy.

I print out the sheet as it is and then fill in my targets for each of the steps I need/want to record gravity or volume readings to fit my particular brewing process/style.

Thanks for the answers!

Didn?t know there were .html templates. This was really simple adjust! :)

Now it say:

◯ Sparge Water Acid: None
◯ Fly sparge with 3,53 L water at 75,6 C
◯ Estimated post-mash gravity: 1,052 SG // <li>Estimated post-mash gravity: $POST_MASH_OG</li>
◯ Add water to achieve boil volume of 10,00 L
◯ Add boil extracts and sugars to achieve pre-boil gravity of 1,078 SG

...

◯ Estimated Post Boil Vol: 8,50 L
◯ Cool wort to fermentation temperature and add water if needed to achieve final volume of 12,50 L
◯ Estimated Original Gravity: 1,062 SG

...

Just how I like it
