what precautions does one need to take when dry hopping?

As long as the hops is fresh and the beer has fermented out there is not much risk of contamination.
I just pitch the hops into the container. Sometimes I do use a hop bag to make it easier to clean up afterwards.

If you use a hop bag, boil it before you put the dry hops in it. The hops won't contaminate the beer at all, but the bag might!
