Is there a way to use these buttons as in V 1.4?
Let's assume I am in a tool window (from a recipe window) and want to return to the recipe without closing the tool window.

Hi,
  If you click the back button it will save what you are using and go back to the previous view.  This is useful if you want to use a tool while editing a recipe for example (give it a try).

  Also you might want to try version 2 of BeerSmith which has tabbed/windowed browsing which lets you open tools and recipes in separate tabs or windows.
