I do a single batch sparge. I empty my MLT before I add any sparge water.

Beersmith seems to default to adding water to equalize the 1st and second runnings. I don't want this. How do I do that.

When I changed my mash profile to uncheck "Batch Sparge using batches that fill xx%", uncheck "Use Equal Batch Sizes", and check "Drain MT before adding sparge water", then the sparge note says to fly  sparge with xx gal of water at xx temp.

Why does it switch to fly sparging? What am I doing wrong?

You need to check the batch sparge box and tell it how full you want to fill your mash tun.  Unchecking equal batches is correct.  If you uncheck batch sparge then BS will assume your are continuous or fly sparging.

Thanks! I'll try it tonight. In retrospect that makes sense.

I would be nice if that was the default, as that is how most batch sparge (I think). Not as efficient as equal sparges, but it is easy and you can heat sparge water while lautering.
