Hello to members,
my name is  Simon and  I'm a new be to allgrain brewing
and a new be to this forum. I live in Guildford Surrey UK, and appreciate and
enjoy real ale.

I have just completed 1st mash and brew following a standard Brewmaster recipe
as a trail run before playing with recipes.
The target OG is 1040 with a final alc % of 4.5
Have ended up with an OG of 1022 before fermentation.

Fermentation 24hrs ago - just starting to bubble - can anyone suggested
what I should do to increase OG to target of 1040 before fermentation really gets underway
My common sense is telling me to add sugar ?
has anyone else come across this probl :-\em

I don't think you'd want to drink it if you added about 50% of your fermentables as simple sugar. You could boil some DME and add that but if you didn't convert you'd be throwing good money after bad.

In the future figure out and rectify the problems before moving on to the next step. You didn't give any information to help you with that.
Did you run an iodine starch test? What is your brewing method? What was the mash efficiency you were using to target 1.040? What was the recipe?

thanks for reply and comment but have decided to go back to basics -
doubled checked Hydrometer with distilled water and have
established it  is giving the wrong reading !!
gravity now established at target level will post agin when fermentation complete
regards
Simon
