Does water volume effect gravity?

I am playing around with my beersmith, making adjustments to future batches from what I have learned from my present batch. Since I have so much trub and I am going to lose some more volume when I rack from my secondary, I doubt I will have 5 gallons.... probably 4.5.
So, I went to increase the preboil water volume in beersmith...but the gravity did not change. Am I missing something?

Post boil vol will change it.  If you add 3 extra gallons of water before the boil, but still boil it all off to your target vol, the gravity is the same.  It's after the boil that you measure gravety for this reason.

This is a great post on how to set up an equipment profile in beersmith. This should answer all your questions.
