I consider myself a novice brewer. I have approximately 10 or so extract kits under my belt and am slowly building up my equipment to transition to all grain, but not there yet.
I do IT work and actually spent a couple of months developing a beer brewing program when I happened across BeerSmith. This program tackled every detail I was thinking of but then took it to the nth degree. Of course it makes sense, I simply didn't have the brewing experience or the time to devote myself 100% to it. I happily admitted defeat and purchased the software.
