Measuring alpha acids in homegrown hops

I recall reading about a method called "titration" for measuring alpha acids at home. You'd have to google it.

Well I did look up titration and I think I would need a degree in pharmacology to understand it. It's a process for measuring amounts of any component of any compound. I was hoping to find some kind of kit specific to hops. I've always just called my homegrown Cascade 5.5%, seems to work out well enough. I was just hoping to find yet another detail to geek out on.

I'm growing nugget which probably wasn't the best choice as it's a bittering hop. I chose nugget as I have a heavy clay soil which I understand most varieties don't like. It's doing much better than I expected in the first year. I'll estimate the alpha at about 11%.

Next year I'll plant an aroma variety such as mathon or pilgrim.
