The carbon filtration removes the chlorine, and the water softener just helps the R.O. unit do it's job better. It essentially removes almost all mineral content, leaving you with near distilled water. It's good for people with very bad water; but on the flipside you have to start from scratch and add all mineral content back, as well as trace minerals that yeast needs for healthy fermentation. With a good yeast nutrient and the water profile tool on BeerSmith you should have no problem using R.O. water.
