REAL HOMEMADE ROOTBEER

Looking for a recipe for REAL homemade rootbeer....The kind the kids can't drink...I've tried half sugar and half DME, let it go for the full ferment, but the little yeasties ate up all the sugar and most of the rootbeer taste was gone...I added extra sugar and more flavoring when priming and that helped considerably. It had a fair kick to it but it still didn't have that 'beer' taste!
Thinking about trying a pale ale malt in the next brew,  ??? HELP!

Be careful if you work with real sassafras as real sassafras root/tree can be TOXIC!  Most sources recommend using extract or using sassafras root bark as a substitute.
