On my third tweaked stout recipe and really looking forward to it as the taste is already very creamy and mellow, the problem is all three batch's have mucked up my usual production with really long fermentation times. Have used different yeasts this latest with wlp004 Irish ale yeast 1.5 Lt starter it still taking twice as long as a normal brew, is it darker grains that slow things down?

No and yes.  The issue isn't the color of the grain per se it is the gravity of the wort.  The more sugar the more yeast and the more processing time needed.  Typically darker beers have high gravity.

Looks like I will have to invest in anouther fermenter! cheers.
