Coffee in beer - how do you do it?

How do you add coffee to beer?

I've seen some recipes that call for coffe added to the primary, but is it brewed coffee or ground coffee?

The best way to do it is to cold soak the grounds.  Just mix the grounds with the correct amount of water and let it sit overnight.  This way you do not get the oils that kill the head on your beer.

My buddy and I did a batch in an experiment.  We brewed 3 oz in 3 cups of water and added it to the primary.  In our case it did not affect the head.  It was a real hit with the group.

Cold soak to not get the oils?  Then put the liquid in the primary, or the grounds?

Wait, I think I get it, its always the liquid.  Cold soaking gets cold "coffee" liquid, hot brewing the normal way gets coffee liquid, but the heat brought out the oils.

Is that the theory?

Also, the recipe calls for 20 oz.  Is that 20 oz. of liquid?
