The BeerSmith Homebrewing Blog – Third Anniversary

This week marks the third anniversary of the BeerSmith blog, which started on 14 Feb 2008. I thought I would mark the event by talking a bit about recent changes and also provide you a few of my favorite posts from the last year.

It has been a big year for BeerSmith and the blog this past year. Some of the big changes over the last year include:

  • Started up the BeerSmith email list last April, which now has well over 4,500 active subscribers (in addition to our 6000+ RSS subscribers)
  • Quit my day job last July to focus on primarily on BeerSmith for the last 6 months
  • Redesigned the BeerSmith blog in late September to give it a much cleaner look
  • Launched the book Home Brewing with BeerSmith in late October – now in print on Amazon and the Kindle
  • Started the BeerSmith podcast, which was featured in iTunes New and Notable
  • Cleaned up the BrewPoll.com news site and gave it a fresh start
  • The discussion forum continues to grow – now over 17,000 posts from 7,300 members
  • The combined BeerSmith sites had over 1 million unique visitors in calendar year 2010
  • I’m about to start testing on the next version of BeerSmith, which will be a available for PC and Mac in a few months

Some Notable Posts from Year 3

To mark the occasion, I thought I would include a few of my favorite posts/podcasts from the past year:

It goes without saying that none of this would be possible without your continued support – both your direct financial support and also the tons of community support you all provide.

Thank you for continuing to support the BeerSmith Home Brewing Blog – and have a great week!

  1. Congratulations,I love your site.
Any word on when beersmith 2.0 will come out? I love the software as well

  2. Trevor,
I’m working around the clock on it now (literally) and will enter testing in just a few days. I’m planning to release it retail in a few months as soon as testing is complete and we’re all comfortable with the final product.

  3. Once you release the updated version of beer smith will it be availabe as an upgrade? Kind of like you upgrade you apps on you phones and such. Or will we have to delete the original beer smith then down load the new one? If so what happens to all the settings you have already saved will you need to save them again, and all your beer recipes and such? Will the cost be the same or will it go up. Thanks for the update.

  4. Hi,
The new version is a complete rewrite (from scratch). You can run it side-by-side with the old version. It will be available at a discount for existing users, but it will be a separate download.

It can read the vast majority of your old data in and I’m working on a little startup wizard to try to find your old data and import it automatically. This should load up the recipes and other material. Some options you may still need to set – primarily because the new version has a lot more of them.

I have not yet set pricing, but will do so once we have the release date locked down. I’m about to go into early testing in the next few days.

    Brad
