I’m happy to announce a series of new add-ons for BeerSmith Desktop. The new add-ons feature over 170 new yeasts, 32 hop varieties and 48 Misc items plus updates for Avangard, Bairds, Muntons and Rahr malts.
Thanks largely to the efforts of fellow brewer Brian Young, we now have most of the latest hops, yeast and misc updates available as easy add-ons in BeerSmith. The names of the new add-ons are listed below.
To download the add-ons in BeerSmith desktop, go to File->Add-ons and click on the Add button, then select the add-on and click Install:
- Hop Update 2016 (48 items)
- Yeast Update 2016 (178 items)
- Misc Update 2016 (48 items)
- Avangard Malts (5 items)
- Bairds Malts (15 items)
- Muntons Malts (17 items)
- Rahr Malts (7 items)
Thanks again to Brian Young for championing this effort! Note that you can download a free trial of BeerSmith 2 desktop here if you have not already downloaded it and I have a series of tutorials here on how to use it!
How do we add these on the mobile version? Thanks
I don’t yet have Add-ons for the mobile version, but I will try to integrate the new hops, yeast, and misc into the next update. I’m also working to add “add-ons” to mobile.
Brad
I checked my add on’s, and see non. How do I tell if I have the add on? I have version 2.2.12. Thanks.
The Avangard Malts update has a typo for country of origin. Says Germnay instead of Germany
Thanks – I just fixed it.
Brad
When you get to the add-ons screen it shows the add-ons you have already installed. You need to click on the “Add” button from there to see the ones available that you have not installed yet.
Brad
Hi there, is there any chance you can get Gladfield malts New Zealand grains into the ingredients. Cheers
Awesome news! How can we tell what new additions are in the misc update?
Hi Brad,
For some reason I do not see Rahr malts listed in the add-ons. Your email stated that Rahr malts have been updated. As a matter of fact, I haven’t had any Rahr malts listed in my Beer Smith program from day one. I just thought these profiles were unavailable. I have version 2.2.12
Any help will be greatly appreciated and thanks for you time (and fantastic program).
I don’t have them separately listed but it is quite a few items. If you really want I can post it as a BSMX file online.
Brad
I am having trouble with the add-on portion for my mac. I followed the directions exactly, but after I press install, they did not install. I exited out of the window with all the options for new add-ons and the new adds are all in the first window where it says add or delete, but when setting up a new recipe, there is no new hops or grains or yeast. Is there another step or am I missing something? I exited out of the program multiple times and restarted it to see if it updated, but all the add-ons are still in that first window for add or delete.
Not sure why that would happen but try first going to File->Add-ons and deleting the ones that did not install and then go to “Add” to install them again.
Cheers!
Brad Smith
Go to File->Addons and you will see a list of the ones you already have installed. Then click on Add to see the ones you have not installed. It should be in that list – select the add-on and click Install to install it.
Brad
I figured it out Brad. Thanks for your prompt response. Apparently they stay in this first window indefinitely for macs. I deleted them and compared each list before I re-installed them and once they were in that add/delete window, they are installed. I was assuming that box would just stay empty or offer another step.
Thanks again!! Cheers!
Dennis
Brad – Thank you for continuing to make BeerSmith such a great value and these Add-ons are no exception! I really appreciate you adding Avangard as they’re making a strong push into the market, yet, it’s tough to find any malt analysis without contacting them directly. Thanks again!
Hey Brad
One last, quick question. Do you see another hop add on that will include Azacca and HBC-438? I was hoping the 2016 add on would have at least azacca, but I realize 438 is pretty new.
Thanks again
I found another typo in the hop update Huell Melon is listed as “Hull Melon”.
Thanks – I corrected it though you will need to uninstall and reinstall the hop update to get it.
Brad
Not yet but you can add it yourself – just go to Ingredients->Hops and click on the add button. The critical data item is the alpha acid which is pretty easy to find.
Brad
What’s the procedure to add these new files v1.4 Build 038?
Why must comments ‘await for moderation’ more than 24 hours before posting?
I have to manually approve comments because we get a lot of spam (thousands of them actually). I don’t always get to it every day in a timely manner.
Brad
I don’t have the add-on posted for 1.4. If you drop me an email I can export them to a BSM file and email them to you however.
Brad
Hi there brad,
I understand that you would have a lot of products to constantly add to you program but there is a couple of requests from the down under brewers.
Joe white malts(AUS)
Voyager malts (AUS)
Gladfield malts (NZ)
and the yeastbay (USA)
and an odd exclusion from Weyermans Carabelge (rather tasty)
Thanks for your time and keep up the good work.
Kind regards
Ben Rose
Brad, when I open add ons on my mac, there is nothing in there for me to choose from..
That shows a list of what is installed currently. You need to go one button further and click on the add button to install new addons!
Hi Brad, any developments on this front? Keen to get some extra malts on the app so I can make recipes on the run.
I’m planning to include add-ons in the next mobile update this fall after the desktop version is released.
Brad,
Are these updates going to be available for the Linux version? I have 2.2.12, but only see 2013 updates.
thanks much,
David
They are available under File->Add-ons->Add in the linux version as well.
Brad
Brad, I downloaded brewsmith 2.0 to a new computer and I cannot find any of the new 2016 grains. I am trying to add midnight wheat. I tried going through file then add ons but there is nothing listed in the add ons tab.
I’m looking for a Yeast Profile for White Labs WLP-075 Hansen Ale Blend. Does one exist?
Hi Brad,
I work with a german malthouse called IREKS. I´m importing their fine base and speciality malts to Brazil, where I live. Many of my clients in Brazil work with your wonderful Program. Unfortunately the IREKS Malt varieties are not in your database. Is there a way to include them? In a form of an add-on, so that everyone could use the data to brew with these malts?
I can provide you with all the information and details you would need.
Thank you very much in advance.
Drop me a note at beersmith (at) beersmith.com and I can send instructions on how to get them listed!
How can I add the grains listed in the BeerSmith 1.4 Grain Extensions for Cargill grains?
Thanks for your help
Go to File->Add-ons and click on the Add button. You should see the Cargill malt add-on there. Just install it and you should be good to go!
I am looking for mossaic hops. I thought updating them will show . but I have to add it manually. unless the update didnt came thru>
Download the various Hop add-ons under File->Add-ons->Add – I believe it is in one of those.
It’s far past the time to update the mobile database. Hire somebody for a few hours of work and just get this done already! Hell, if you posted a volunteer wanted thread on Reddit, it would be done for free by the community!
The ability to download “add-ons” in the mobile will be in the next release. Its already done and in fact it is in beta testing now.
Hey Brad, was wondering if you had any plans of having an add-on for Swaen Malts? They have become quite popular lately, at least up here on the mean streets of Minnesota they have!
I can not find Denali hops in Beersmith. Are they listed? a/k/a Nuggetzilla
You can easily add them – go to Ingredients->Hops and click on the add button to add a new entry.
Hi Brad, Could you add another malting company’s malt under add-ons if we send the information through to you?
It is The Swaen Malts from the Netherlands. I have also noticed people are requesting it in previous posts. Swaen Malts are really making headway in market penetration and are already available in several countries. I can send all the malts they provide in an export file if needs be.
Regards
Leon van der Westhuizen
I would be happy to add them – if you can export the BSMX file by selecting the items you want to export in BeerSmith and right click->Export Selected that would be great. Send the BSMX file to beersmith at beersmith.com and I’ll get it posted quickly. — Brad

Brad,
I’ve emailed you before that no matter what I do (turn off firewall and antivirus) I click to add addons and I can’t. Once I got it to work, but it seemed to have been luck. I’ve been trying for months. “Could not connect to download the list of add-ons from the internet” Do you have a website or list you can load those up at so I can download them separately?
Drop me an email at beersmith at beersmith.com and let me know which ones you need and I’ll post them for you.
where can I find the add-on of The Swaen malts?
